#EndBadGovernance Protest – Zamfara Protesters Wave Russian Flag
By Reporter 2
On Monday, the fifth day of the #EndBadGovernance protest, some protesters from Zamfara State were seen waving the Russian flag in Gusau, the State capital.
The protesters, who gathered again on Monday, 5 August 2024, criticized the condition of affairs concerning security in the North-Western region. They bemoaned the lack of tangible measures taken by the government to tackle the problem and vowed to keep up the protests until the government took the necessary action.
Protesters claim that bandits have placed high taxes on them, which they must pay to access their farmlands and avoid attacks. They demand that the government take the appropriate action to shield the people from the bandits’ actions.
The citizens of Gusau, who were mostly children and youth, marched through several parts of the city with Russian flag, including Tundunwada, Freedom Square, Government House, and Gada Biyu. To maintain peace and order, security forces, primarily members of the Nigerian Police and the military, are keeping a tight eye on the demonstrators at the moment.
Presently, Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense and the immediate former Governor of Zamfara State has heavy security personnel stationed at his home, including Nigerian Police, Soldiers, and DSS personnel. Recall that the state branch of the All Progressives Congress had accused the state’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of funding demonstrators to attack Matawalle’s home.
