The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has expressed sorrow over the death of its student, Mr Godwin Francis Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student, who was allegedly shot by a yet-to-be-identified military man off campus. Demanding justice for the deceased.

This was made known by Punch News on the 9th of June, 2025.

According to Punch Metro, the family of the deceased accused the police force of covering up the circumstances behind the death of their son outside the university campus.

The deceased’s brother, Francis Akpakpan said that the deceased had come to watch a football match at his lounge on April 16 and later went home. He added that he could not reach his brother over the phone after repeated attempts.

According to the brother, someone who claimed to be a police officer picked up the call and informed him that his brother had been shot by a soldier.

According to Punch, The state Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, reacted to the allegations by the family during an interview on Sunday that the student was allegedly killed by a stray bullet fired by a military officer and not police.

The circumstances surrounding Akpakpan’s death remain unclear, but the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised alarm over what it calls an “alleged murder” during a security operation.
