The Kano State Government on Friday, 25 October 2024, donated N28.4 million to 62 people who had been affected by the fire incident in the State.

The announcement was made by Governor Abba-Yusuf during the unveiling of the cash distribution to victims of the fire disaster in Kano.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Abdullahi, said the gesture was part of the State Government’s intervention to bring succour to the affected victims.

“We are here to console and support the victims and to help ease their pains with this token,” she said.

The affected people lost property worth N835.9 million, according to Alhaji Isyaku Kubarachi, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency. Eleven victims from the Dakata small scale benefited from the gesture, while seven of the 62 victims lost their lives.

“We carried out an evaluation to ascertain the degree of harm and drafted an extensive report to the State Government for support,” he stated.

Kubarachi expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by Governor Yusuf, the Nigeria Red Cross, the National Emergency Management Agency, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs, and other relevant parties.

Additionally, the NEMA Coordinator, Kano Territorial Office, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, advised the people to manage fires carefully, especially women who use charcoal and firewood. To prevent “inferno,” he suggested that they turn off their electrical devices whenever “they are going out or going to bed.”
