Man Rescued from Ibadan Explosion

An unidentified Man has been extracted alive from the debris of the explosion that occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, 16 January 2024.

Residents of Ibadan were terrified on Tuesday night when an explosion happened along Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija neighbourhood of the city.

In the meantime, the explosion that rocked Ibadan, the Capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday night affected around 20 residences, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

NEMA stated in a statement on Wednesday that they did not yet have any information regarding the number of casualties.

It also disclosed that the explosion was most likely triggered by an improvised explosive device.

“Over 20 houses were affected. Casualty figures can not be ascertained for now. Search and rescue operation is still ongoing,” the agency said.

According to the State Governor, Seyi Makinde, explosive devices hidden by unauthorised miners were the source of Tuesday’s explosion that shook the Bodija Area of Ibadan, the State Capital, according to preliminary investigations conducted by Security Forces.

The Governor tweeted on Wednesday, 17 January 2024, “Preliminary investigations by the Security Agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

He continued by saying that the blast left 77 persons injured and two dead.

Nonetheless, the State Government has made a request for citizens to leave the location of the tragedy.

On its X account on Wednesday morning, the Government stated that “this will enable emergency and rescue efforts to continue at the site without interference.” Throughout Tuesday night, and to this Wednesday, earthmoving Machinery has been used in search and rescue operations.
