Zenith Bank Appoints Dr. Adaora Umeoji as GMD/CEO

By Halimat

Zenith Bank has appointed Adaora Umeoji as its new Group Managing director and Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO).

Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji has made a significant breakthrough by becoming the first female GMD/CEO in the bank’s history, marking a remarkable milestone for gender inclusivity in the institution.

Before assuming this position, Dr. Umeoji served as the Deputy Managing Director of the bank, a role she held since October 28, 2016. With nearly three decades of experience in the banking sector, including an impressive twenty-six years of dedicated service at Zenith Bank, her elevation to the top leadership role is a testament to her unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership qualities, and proven track record of success.

The selection of Adaora Umeoji as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer is effective from June 1, 2024, pending approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). She succeeds Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose accomplished five-year tenure concludes on May 31, 2024, marked by notable success.

Dr. Umeoji attended Harvard Business School and Columbia Business School, earning certificates in Advanced Management and Global banking. She also holds degrees in sociology, accounting, and law; and furthered her education with a master’s and a doctorate in business administration.

Several professional organizations affiliate with her and the Nigerian government honored her in 2022. She’s also a Peace Advocate for the United Nations. In addition to her professional achievements, she runs two NGOs focused on cancer education and supporting children’s education, especially for girls.

Recognized for her humanitarian work, she received an award from the Sun Newspaper in 2023. She founded the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria and holds prestigious titles from religious organizations.
