Constitutional Amendment: Lawmakers Propose 6-year Single Tenure for President and Governors
By Reporter 2
A group of 35 lawmakers known as the Reformers has proposed major modifications to the 1999 Constitution, including establishing a six-year single term for the President and Governors. The lawmakers also sought a constitutional amendment that would create two vice presidents from Nigeria’s southern and northern regions.
Another key proposal the group put out is to rotate the Presidency among the six geopolitical zones and hold all elections on the same day. Briefing journalists on Monday, 10 May 2024, at the National Assembly, the lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, stated that they have produced 50 proposed changes, six of which have been listed on the house floor.
“Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south) and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy),” Ugochinyere stated. Ugochinyere also said the country’s Constitution had shown a huge gap that must be addressed.
