LP Crisis Exacerbates as Abure and Okafor Engage in New Argument
By Roselyn James
The National Working Committee meeting of the Labour Party faction led by Julius Abure on Tuesday, 27 August 2024, provoked a new confrontation between the factional Chairman, Callistus Okafor, who declared the meeting to be invalid and lacked the authority to do so.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, 27 August 2024, Okafor maintained that the alleged meeting called by Julius Abure was unlawful, claiming he had no authority to summon a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) once his term had ended.
Responding to the communiqué released by the Abure-led NWC, Okafor advocated for an inclusive convention as a means of carrying out the consent judgment reached in 2018. According to him, after the recent party dispute, Julius Abure’s leadership was rejected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Omar Abdulwaheed, the Chairman of the Labour Party’s National Transition Committee, cautioned Julius Abure to cease presenting himself as the party’s national chairman, pointing out that his term ended on June 9, 2024, in a separate interview with the media.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission established the National Transition Committee on April 14, 2024, to realign the party’s leadership.
