The Law Enforcement Authorities disclosed that it was looking into what appears to be an attempted assassination on former President Donald J. Trump, after the Secret Service opened fire on an armed man at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, 15 September 2024 just over two months after he was injured during an attempt on his life.

Law enforcement authorities stated during a briefing that Mr. Trump was on the course when Secret Service agents opened fire after spotting a suspect hiding in the bushes a few hundred yards away.

According to the Secret Service, the suspect fled the area in a car before being apprehended at a traffic stop. A weapon with a scope was found in the bushes, along with a camera and two backpacks, and it was unclear at this time whether the suspect had fired any shots.

An official of U.S law enforcement identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii; he also spoke on the condition of anonymity since the inquiry is still ongoing. In 2023, Mr. Routh was interviewed by The New York Times for an article regarding Americans contributing to the Ukrainian war effort.

Mr. Routh, who lacked military experience, claimed to have gone there in 2022 to recruit Afghan fighters for the conflict following Russia’s entry. He revealed to The Times that he had once gone to Washington to speak with politicians to bolster backing for Ukraine. He stated, “I’m just a citizen of the United States that’s helping out.”

The incident, which resulted in gunshots and an arrest, happened after a 20-year-old gunman shot and wounded President Trump’s right ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, leaving one spectator dead and two others wounded. The gunman was taken down by Secret Service agents.
