Five alleged Chinese illegal miners have been taken into custody in Akwa Ibom State by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) Uyo Zonal Directorate.
The arrests took place at Ndito-Eka-Iba village in the Ibieno Local Government Area, according to a statement made by Mr. Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity for the EFCC, as reported by Vanguard. The suspects were taken into custody by the EFCC’s Special Task Force on Illegal Mining, following reliable information on the illegal operations of foreign mining companies in the Eket and Ibieno Local Government Areas
The illegal miners who have been taken into custody are Chen Mou Zhou, Xie Bin, Li Yi, and Chen Zeng, who were arrested on August 29, while Zhon Qinping was arrested on September 10, 2024. They were apprehended at a suspected illegal mining site, where they are believed to have been mining the titanium-iron oxide mineral ilmenite. The suspects will be charged in court after the investigations.
