The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for the Edo governorship election scheduled for September 21st, Asue Ighodalo, is receiving support from Nigerian singer David Adeleke, also known as Davido.
On Sunday night, 15 September 2024, the Award-winning musician endorsed Ighodalo on his social media and called on the younger generation to turn out in large numbers and vote for the PDP candidate.
He claimed that voting for Ighodalo was the right choice because he shared the same hometown as his late mother.
On a photo of the PDP candidate, the well-known musician wrote, “The next governor of my mother’s homeland.” Davido has millions of social media followers, and his endorsement might shape the narrative around the next election, especially among young people.
Celebrities such as Banky W and his wife, actress Adesua Etomi, actress Etinosa, Nollywood actor and producer Charles Onojie, and others were known to publicly back the PDP candidate, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Additional notable business people include Dr. Aloy Chife and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president of Nigeria. Former Cross River State governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke have also been outspoken in their support of Ighodalo.
In the face of strong opposition, PDP’s prospects are anticipated to be enhanced by the mix of celebrity endorsements and political heavyweights’ support.
